Bertie and Croc fly!

Norway, historical buildings

Bertie bravely puffed his chest out, stood as tall as his 5 inches would allow him and looked squarely at the seagull. He took a deep breath and began to explain, they were lost. The bag they travelling in had left without them and they were now trying to find it.

The seagull stood on its skinny legs, which Croc was amazed would still hold up such a large bird, and listened intently to Bertie. Studying him carefully with his beady eyes. “And, well, that’s it really.” Bertie finished. There was a pause, the seagull cocked his head and said, “Well in that case, allow me to be of service.” He bowed deeply. Bertie looked excited, Croc looked suspicious.

“Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Ivar.” Said the Seagull.

“I’m Bertie and this is Croc” Said Bertie, waving a paw in Croc’s general direction. Croc looked at him angrily. He had been trying to make himself as small and inconspicuous as he could and now Bertie had just completely blown his cover!

“Let’s get started.” Said Ivar, “Up you go!” And he picked a shocked looking Croc up in his beak and plonked him on his back. Bertie was beside himself with excitement, jumping up and down. They were going to fly!!!

As Ivar set off into the head wind, Croc ducked down as low as he could on the birds back and held on for his life! Bertie, huge grin and fur ruffling in the wind, sat upright with one paw outstretched to feel the air rushing past them. “I think I have seen your bag on a boat” Said Ivar as he headed out to the harbour. Oh my! Thought Bertie, what an adventure. Croc tired to think of home, a swamp, warm and safe and very much on the ground.

They circled a couple of boats looking at the passengers, trying to see if they could spy the camera bag. There were several bags but none of them theirs. Then Bertie let out a squeak and pointed. There it was!!! On one of the boats. Ivar flew lower to get a better look. Yes, that was definitely it! Bertie was so excited he forgot to hold onto Ivar and leaned a little too far. He began to fall. Instinctively he grabbed hold of Croc and they slipped from the birds backs together.

“Brave little bears” Shouted Ivar after them. “Good luck” And he flew back to the shore.

Bertie and Croc landed with a soft bump on the canopy of the boat. As they peeped over the edge they looked for the bag. They couldn’t see it!? Then Croc nudged Bertie urgently. Bertie looked where he was pointing. It was another boat, and there was their bag! They had fallen onto the WRONG boat.

“Oh no!” Wailed Bertie and he sat down with a plop and they watched the shore disappear as they slowly moved further away!

Bertie and Croc were on the move again. They couldn’t see a lot as it was quite dark outside, but the two friends were excited to work out where they were. They kept peeping out of a small zip hole in the camera bag, taking in the sights and sounds. Bertie noticed that where ever they were it was very clean!

Eventually the motion of the bag stopped. Bertie peeped out first and went back into the bag to pull Croc with him. They were in front of a beautiful water feature, right in the centre of the town. The two friends sat together mesmerised, watching the water change colours from blue, to purple, to red, to green.

After some time Croc began to feel a little chilly. He decided that his feet were telling him it was time to head back into the warmth of the bag, but as he looked behind him to where the bag had been it was no longer there. Croc felt a moment of panic and nudged Bertie. Bertie turned round and also realised the bag they always travelled in was no where to be seen. Wide eyed in panic the two friends looked at each other….what were they to do now???

An evening arrival

Norway blog Bertie & Croc

Bertie and Croc now knew the signs that a new journey was just about to start. Bertie had even mastered being able to judge just how long the journey would be from the size of the suitcases which were loaded carefully into the car.

The familiar sounds of the airport and the familiar feelings of the plane taken off lulled both Bertie and Croc into a deep sleep. They lay at the bottom of the camera bag wondering where they would end up next. Bertie dreamt it was an exciting place with lots to see and do, Croc dream it was warm and had nice clear, warm waters for him to swim in.

When they finally stopped travelling Bertie knew they had arrived at their hotel. He had heard different words being spoken and knew that they were in a different country. He peeped out of the bag and made his way to the hotel window. It didn’t tell him too much looking at the cobbled street below.

What happened next came as a complete surprise to him….Both Bertie and Croc were scooped up and bundled into the camera bag. They were going out for an explore, but it was night time!?

When the sway of the bag stopped Bertie and Croc peeped out. A cool breeze brushed at their fur and Croc realised his dream of being somewhere warm wasn’t happening. The view in front of them was pretty spectacular! They were near what looked like a harbour, the water twinkled in the moonlight and a strange, abstract structure on the other side of the water was lit up like a Christmas tree. They could see the shadows of people moving around in front of the light, looked blurred and tiny next to the huge windows.

Croc wondered what this multi-coloured building would look like during the day. Bertie was pretty sure that they would get a chance to find out! Little did they both know how close they would get to this impressive piece of architecture.

A year of adventure!

2018-01-09 Norway post

As Bertie and Croc looked back at 2017 they realised they had been very busy! So busy, in fact, that they haven’t had time to blog about all the things they managed to fit in.

After Bertie and Croc exchanged Christmas gifts and placed their special decorations on the Christmas tree they found themselves looking back at photographs. They have been to Rome, moved house and welcomed a new arrival to the family. They also went on another iconic trip which they haven’t written about.

This trip was a little colder than Rome. In fact, Bertie almost wished that he had packed his woolly hat! Croc wished he was back in the fountain in the boiling heat in Rome.

The next few blogs will be about Bertie and Croc’s trip to Norway!

We hope you enjoy reading them as much as Bertie and Croc enjoyed experiencing Norway….

A brief glimpse

Can you see anyone in the windows?

As the sun slowly disappeared behind the large building in front of them Croc and Bertie felt quite relaxed watching people come and go as they sat in St Peters Square in Rome. They had had a busy day and the cool evening was perfect to lay back on the stone floor and watch the world go by.

Ever since Bertie had told Croc about this mysterious person called the Pope who lived in the big building in front of them, Croc had become quite obsessed with watching the windows in the hope of catching a glimpse of him. He wasn’t the only one he noticed with relief. There were a few people sat on chairs looking up at the large building in front.

The building was now beautiful illuminated in the fading light. It’s windows glowed a soft warm orange light and Bertie found it very peaceful. He liked night time photography. It was one of the things he enjoyed the most about travelling to new places. Everything seemed to change and take on a magical appearance once the sun had set and the sky was dark.

Bertie began to feel excited as they moved their way around the square. He posed proudly for photographs, keeping very, very Delete repeated word still so he would not look blurred in the image. Croc stayed very, very still so he didn’t slip and fall off the railings they were posing on!

Suddenly, Croc grabbed Bertie. Fearing his friend was falling, Bertie held on tight and realised that Croc was excitedly pointing to one of the upstairs windows of the building. Bertie turning just in time to see the shape of a man waving and then he moved from the window and disappeared into the warmly lit room!

Croc was gesturing wildly. Was it the Pope that the two friends had just seen? Bertie liked to think so, more because Croc was so excited and proud of himself, but he would never be 100% sure. What do you think?

Bertie and Croc had had quit a big day. They were feeling pretty tired out, not just from their adventure but also from the heat of the city of Rome. They were glad when they felt the temperature begin to cool and the sun start to sink slowly in the sky.

They were surprised to find that the camera bag had not stopped its familiar swaying which meant that they were still out and about exploring. When it finally came to a halt Bertie peeped out and saw they were in the most impressive, open square.

The setting sun was casting long shadows across the square and highlighted the large pillars which made a semi circle around the central building. Bertie marvelled at the wonderful effect the light cast on the pillars as the sun dropped down behind the large building in front of them.

Then Bertie realised where they were….they were at the back of the Vatican. Bertie began to realise they were in St Peter’s Square. There were several people around them. Some of them sat, like Bertie and Croc, admiring the evenings setting sun. Others were walking around looking at the fountains and structures which were in the square.

“Oh,” said Bertie out loud. “I do hope we get to see the Pope!” Croc appeared beside Bertie and shrugged. “The Pope” repeated Bertie. Croc looked at him blankly. Bertie sighed and began to explain that the Pope was a very important person in the Catholic Christian religion. The word ‘pope’ means ‘father’ in Latin. The Pope lives and works in the Vatican. Bertie pointed at the large building in front of them in the middle of the circle of pillars. Croc’s eyes grew wider. He couldn’t imagine living in a house that big! He’d get lost!

As the two friends sat on one of the small pillars to get a better view of the building, Croc squinted at the windows trying to see if he could see anyone inside. He wondered what it would be like to be a Pope. It sounded like a very important job to him!

Fountains of wishes

Bertie and Croc were feeling a little hot in the comfort of the black camera bag. Every now and again, Bertie would waft the corner of the bag open in an attempt to create a slight breeze… didn’t work very well and usually resulted in more warm air coming into the bag.

Bertie lifted the flap of the bag for the third time. There were lots of voices and noise outside, which was different from the honking horns he had heard the last time he had attempted to let some air in. He braved a peek out of the bag and realised they had stopped.

There were crowds of people. He had not seen this many people since they were in the Vatican. “We must be somewhere important” Thought Bertie and went to nudge Croc. Croc was already beside Bertie, which made him jump a little. “That was unexpected!” Bertie said to his friend. “I usually have to come hunting for you at the bottom of the bag.” Then Bertie noticed something. His friends eyes were wide and Croc was staring in the direction of all the people. Bertie strained to see what he was looking at and as his eyes adjusted to the bright light he could see water.

“Oh no!” Thought Bertie, “Here we go again!”

Being a Crocodile, and being from the tropics, Croc had a certain fascination with water. Especially when it was as warm as it was today. They began to move again. This time they were making their way towards the water and Bertie could see that it was actually a fountain. The fountain had the most magnificent sculptures behind it. The water was the most beautiful turquoise blue and Bertie had to admit it did look very inviting.

Bertie began to look around for some clues as to where they were. Croc began to look around for an escape route to the fountain. He wasn’t quite brave enough to make his way out of the bag and pick his route through the crowds. Bertie saw a sign. “Oh my” He thought. “This is the Trevi Fountain.” He explained to Croc. “It is one of the most famous fountains in the world!” Croc continued to look at the crystal clear waters. Bertie carried on explaining that if you throw a coin in the fountain you will return to Rome. Some people even believe you can make a wish and it will come true! Croc thought, if you throw a crocodile in the fountain they will be very happy indeed and that would definitely be a wish come true!

They were achingly close to the water now and Croc, in a fit of bravery, made a leap for freedom. He tumbled down onto the railings. He began to make his way towards the water and away from Bertie’s shouts. A man, not noticing the small crocodile knocked Croc and sent him sliding further along the railing. He bumped into the arm of a lady and then fell a few inches onto the concrete below the railings. He began to feel scared. He started to forget about the water as he tried to dodge the people who were crowding around him.

“Eek” Croc squeaked as he was nudged again, this time back towards the direction he had just travelled from. He covered his eyes then felt a soft pair of hands on him guiding him to safety. It was Bertie. Croc grabbed onto his little friend in a fit of relief and let himself be led back to the safety of the camera bag! Thank goodness for good friends, thought Croc as he snuggled bac into the safety of the bag. Bertie closed the zip just in case Croc got any more ideas and they felt themselves being carried away from the crowds and the magnificent fountain.
