What to do with those empty beer cans…

On reading the title of this post you may presume I am going to talk about recycling. In a way I suppose I am. In Darwin there is a unique annual event which encourages the recycling of beer cans.

Welcome to the Beer Can Regatta!

This annual festival began in 1974 and was introduced to Darwin by Darwin businessmen, Lutz Frankenfeld and Paul Rice-Chapman. Locals creatively work out ways to connect beer cans together to make a boat which is tested out in the ocean on Mindil Beach.

There were some interesting designs this year, with some people cheating by gluing the cans to existing boat structures and some being much more adventurous and only using beer cans.

As you can see….even Bertie got in on the act!
